Staying Healthy Over the Holidays

We are right in the thick of holiday season and many celebrations tend to include big meals, decadent desserts, alcoholic beverages, and late nights. While indulging in these treats every once in a while is absolutely fine, a whole month of these celebrations can start to take a toll on your body, mind and health. Sleeping, eating, and exercise form the foundation for good health, both physical and mental. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind as you enjoy the holiday celebrations.

1. Don’t forget about exercise. If you are eating a little different than what you typically do, it is pretty easy to let go of the exercise routine and vow to pick it up in New Year. It’s fine to scale back on physical activity, but try to keep some sort of movement a part of your daily life.

2. Be conscious of how much you are sleeping. It is almost inevitable that during this time of year there are going to be some late nights. While you want to make the most of the season and enjoy the parties, don’t forget that your body and mind needs time to rest and recuperate. If you aren’t fully rested and energized it can be tough to really enjoy parties.

3. Make time for yourself. Whatever stress relieving activities you do during the rest of the year, make sure you still do them over the holiday season. In fact with all the stresses the holidays can bring it’s even more important to take time out for yourself and have an outlet for your stress.

4. Pick and choose. Prioritize what parties and gatherings you will be attending. Once you have an idea of how many celebrations you will be going to you can pace yourself and plan.

5. Enjoy what you eat. One of the best part of holiday gatherings is the food. It can be easy to get caught up in all the goodies and not really even pay attention to what you are putting in your mouth. Be mindful, pay attention to the smell and texture of your food. Really take the time to enjoy and savor it. If you pay attention and truly enjoy what you are eating, you will more likely to pay attention when your body tells you it’s time to stop.

The holidays only come once a year so enjoy all that they have to offer. Whatever it is you celebrate, I and everyone at PPC, hope your celebration is merry and bright!
